A Mexican restaurant that does brunch? Count me in! Frida's was a cozy little joint just a block from my hotel, and I stopped in for a quick breakfast before I headed to the airport. Decorated with prints of the paintings of who I assume is the namesake (Frida Kahlo), this endearing joint was fairly empty when I wandered in at about 7:30 am, but soon filled with patrons by 8.
Service was friendly and attentive, and the burrito... oh man. It was STUFFED with eggs and cheese, shreds of chicken and chunks of avocado, served with what I believe was salsa de aguacate (avocado salsa) and pico de gallo, plus a side of potatoes and a slice of orange. Everything was good and the portion was more than ample - well worth the twelve dollars.
While I wish the burrito had a little more chicken in exchange for some of the egg, this is more of a textural thing for me and not at all a complaint about the taste. The salsa especially was delicious - spicy, but creamy. Definitely give this place a try! -

Frida's isn't exactly a diner. Its' homey atmosphere , and attention to detail goes well beyond that of a diner. Fresh ingredients are prepared to order, and tastefully presented . Service is freindly, and expeditious.
Frida's Mexican -influenced menu showcases the kitchen's ability to cook and serve a variety of items well . The sliced orange garnish is actually still juicy! Not feeling in the mood for Mexican...... Frida's menu is varied, offering breakfast / brunch and lunch items as well as salads, burgers, & sandwiches .
We had the avocado omelette . My guest who has food "issues", asked the server to basically "reconstruct" the ingredients listed for that dish on the menu. ( I was looking for a spot to hide under the table while she dictated her substitutions .....) However, the gracious server was patient and willing. My guest loved her omelette as well as the homemade pumpkin muffin served alongside it.
I had the Hobo Hash. An ample serving of bone in ham mixed with red potatoes, bacon, broccoli, & cheese . Topped with 2 perfectly poached eggs ( with the yolks soft and runny). YASS!! Served with cornbread.
But I also ordered their delicious rye toast.
In talking with the server, we found out that chef/owner was none other than the chef from the late "Danny's Egghead DIner". It was always a great breakfast/lunch spot. Glad he opened Frida's . Its no wonder they have almost a 5 Yelp star rating. -

Frida's is an excellent place to go for a classic breakfast of pancakes. I ordered the buttermilk pancakes and opted for the added strawberries on top with Vanilla whip topping (both the strawberries and the topping incur separate costs, 3 extra dollars for the strawberries and 2 for the whip cream). Though I think the prices for those things where a bit much, speaking just on flavor alone, it was very good. I have since gone back and gotten the pancakes again (just plain) and still been satisfied. They are extremely fluffy and full of flavor! I still see myself going back to try other things from their menu.
Side note: They serve breakfast all day! Which is a huge pious for those of us who like breakfast for dinner. -

Hidden | Tasty | Easy
Hidden: Frida's is a place I've often walked by and never really noticed. It is one of the few spots in downtown Evanston without a marquee or Auning which make you do a double take and look at the restaurant. Therefore, I've never found myself wanting to go in until Monica wanted to check it out.
Tasty: While I only had the Frida Potatoes, they were DELICIOUS! They have the proper amount of spice, taste, and savor. Probably top 5 breakfast potatoes I've had in the past 2-3 years.
Attentive: The whole process was easy. We went during peak brunch hours on July 4th, and about half of the tables were occupied. The hostess let us sit where we wanted, offered suggestions and clarifications, and never let our water glasses go unattended for more than 5 minutes.
Pro Tip: 10% Northwestern Discount.
Pro Tip: They only have two tables of four for outside seating. So if you want an outdoor location, this is not the spot. -

~Monica's T.A.S.T.E. Test~
Taste: I had the Montana hash which was unreal amazing. The veggies were perfectly cooked and the topping of egg and chipotle sauce made it hard to put my fork down. Pair that with the tender and flakey fresh biscuit, and this meal was undeniably the best meal of my week.
Atmosphere: The décor was subtle and had a Spanish vibe. The seating was limited as its a smaller storefront but there was no line to sit.
Service: The waiter was knowledgeable about the menu and got our order right with the modifications made. Very attentive and nice.
Tab: The prices of each dish were more than reasonable for downtown Evanston. Mine was $12, and for 3 people the bill ended at $40 after tip.
Extra wow factor: How great everyone's meal looked when they came out. They pay attention to presentation and make it appetizing from the moment you see it on the menu.
Does it pass the T.A.S.T.E test? Heck yes. This is my go to breakfast spot now.
